Friday Foodie Finds
Tempest and I felt a little more greedy and drove out to Upper Thomson Road for dinner. I was telling him about my lunch in Longhouse & Icekimos & the famous cheesecake brownie in nearby Baker's Story. We were fans of cheesecakes, brownies, and more recently, waffles. So the two gluttons figured out the way to Upper Thomson/Sin Ming Road from my office.
Cafes and restaurants, big and small, lined both sides of the road. We strolled down the path, passing by "Hooked on Heads" - famous for their fish head curry, "Oiishi Pizza", "Barnsbury" - some steakhouse, "Tangshui HK Cafe" - which my colleague said was lousy, "Zui Fairprice Live Seafood Restaurant", "Ms Clarity Cafe" and numerous smaller chinese/muslim cooked food shops.
We settled for "Ms Clarify Cafe" for one, we have never eaten there before, two, the food looks good and reasonably priced, and three, Oiishi Pizza is already closed for the day. I had the "Risotto Venere" - italian wild black rice cooked with sauteed prawns and artichoke chips. The wild black rice turns out to be similar to the sticky black glutinous rice that we see in pulor hitam. Very sweet and fragrant. Goes well with the saltish artichokes and prawns. Tempest took the squid-inked linguine with stewed beef and sauteed squid rings. The beef was tender and full-flavoured; the squid rings had a nice chewy texture but a tad too small. The linguine was erm black, and smelt faintly of 'squid'. Comparatively, I thought my choice of dish tasted better. :-p
Initially our thought was to have dinner in Ms Clarity and then hopped over to Icekimos to try their special promo item @ $5.90 - waffles sandwiched with durian puree, topped with a scoop of their special flavored home-made ice cream. And perhaps 'ta pao' the cheesecake brownie from next door Baker's Story for breakfast tomorrow.
But Tempest turned my attention to the 'warm bread and butter pudding with vanilla icecream'. That got me. I also succumbed to a moist chocolate lava cake. Very cute, it's served in a cup instead of a plate like most other places. Our guess is that it's meant to contain the liquid that oozes out so that it would be easier to scoop out every single drop. But because of the design, the icecream sinks and mixes with the 'lava' chocolate when we sink our spoons in. This cools down the warm chocolate and kinda coagulates the cocoa. The sponge was also too powdery and not chocolately enough. The bread & butter pudding faired better. Placed in a middle of a plate with a sea of vanilla sauce surrounding it, the raisin-covered rectangular pudding was warm, soft and moist. Maybe they could add more rum if they did (Tempest thought he tasted a tinge of it) put in any. Nice roundup to the meal.
Even better when we settled the bill. $39.60 nett. NO GST & SERVICE CHARGE. :-)
Sigh, the good feeling didn't lasted long. The parking warden left a $30 note at the windscreen of his car.
